Martin Short's performance as a corporate lawyer protecting a chemical company is the most arresting work in the series outside of Glenn Close herself. The case is the most morally complex of the run, the timeline manipulation most surgical, and the Ellen-Patty tension most genuinely tragic. The season's conclusion is among the strongest of any cable drama of its decade.
