Series 5 expanded to six episodes - the longest run in the show's history - as the narrative moved into the early Seventies and the social certainties of the previous decade curdled. The expanded canvas gave more room to secondary characters and subplots. The four-episode format that preceded it had a concentrated economy the longer run traded for breadth.
