Euphoria Season 2 Episode 5 'Stand Still Like the Hummingbird' aired February 6, 2022 and was immediately identified by critics as the finest hour the series had produced. The episode runs Rue's relapse in near-real-time across a single day: she learns her stash has been discovered, and the episode follows her as she systematically destroys every relationship she has accumulated in order to protect her supply. Sam Levinson wrote and directed the episode, and the directorial choice to strip away the show's usual heightened visual palette in favour of exhausted handheld tracking reinforced the episode's argument that the spectacular surface of the show was always a function of Rue's interior narration - when she is in crisis rather than remembering, the glamour disappears. IndieWire noted that Zendaya's performance added 'heartbreaking levity to moments when her spiraling teenager feels invincible instead of fragile.' Zendaya won her second Emmy for Lead Actress largely on the strength of this episode, making her the only person to have won that category twice for the same role.
