Hawley's choice to elide the year allowed the episode to focus entirely on the transformation rather than dramatising it incrementally, and the gap forced the audience to read the changes as permanent rather than temporary. The show's Midwestern social register - nice people doing terrible things with polite efficiency - finds one of its purest expressions in the convention sequence, where Lester's new manner is interpreted by every person around him as a natural confidence rather than a product of what he has done.
