Season 5 is the first season shot entirely beyond the books - and the seams show. Dorne is nearly universally cited as the weakest subplot in the series; the Sand Snakes don't land with the menace intended. Cersei's political gambit with the Faith Militant pays off handsomely in the finale's Walk of Shame sequence. Jon Snow's arc at the Wall reaches its logical and devastating conclusion in the penultimate episode. Hardhome (S5E8) is some of the finest action filmmaking in TV history - critics were clear that it alone justified the season's 93% RT score. But Stannis and Shireen's arc, resolved off-screen, felt like the writers had run out of patience with a character they'd built for four seasons.
