Halt and Catch Fire premiered June 1, 2014 on AMC to a 76-percent Tomatometer from critics who found the pilot's craft - its 1983 Dallas sun-bleached palette, Lee Pace's intensity as Joe MacMillan, and director Juan Jose Campanella's precise visual design - substantially superior to the formula it was operating within. The Hollywood Reporter called it 'a triumphant pilot with excellent writing, impressive acting and a noteworthy cinematic visual style.' The period texture of Cardiff Electric and the IBM clone wars backdrop were immediately praised as meticulous and evocative. Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis drew stronger notices as Gordon Clark and Cameron Howe - the characters who would eventually carry the series' best work.
