Inspector Koo Episode 1 aired October 30, 2021 on JTBC and introduced the series' central dynamic with an energy that distinguished it from the standard Korean crime procedural. Lee Young-ae's Koo Kyung-yi is introduced in full mid-slump - dishevelled, underemployed, and spectacularly unmotivated following her husband's death - and the premiere establishes her eccentric intelligence before the case gives it a target. Kim Hye-jun's K is introduced in parallel with cheerful precision: a college student who stages accidents so convincingly that an insurance investigator is required to find the one wrong detail. The Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer of 79 percent reflects a show whose craft ceiling is the villain's performance - Kim Hye-jun subsequently won the Baeksang Best New Actress award for this role, the clearest external validation the series received.
