Season 2 came with more ambition and more cooks - seven episodes directed by filmmakers including Neeraj Ghaywan, Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, but also guest directors whose tonal inconsistency shows. The season's best episodes - particularly Ghaywan's wedding set in a marginalised community - are extraordinary. The worst feel like competent homework. Sobhita Dhulipala shoulders considerably more dramatic weight than season 1 required, and she delivers. The finale lands with more emotional force than critics expected given a structurally weaker penultimate stretch. Seven episodes was the right call over nine.
