Edie Falco, moving directly from The Sopranos, drew overwhelmingly positive notices - the show was called 'smart, acrid, alternately sharp and sentimental' and the best Showtime series yet on addiction. The half-hour format gives the season a compressed, pressurised quality that longer dramas rarely achieve. Merritt Wever's Zoey established herself as an early ensemble standout.
