This remains the series' most significant missed opportunity. The Enishi arc, which would have provided thematic closure to Kenshin's role in the Bakumatsu, did not receive animated form until a separate OVA production. The standard viewing recommendation is to treat the original series as ending with the Kyoto arc for narrative satisfaction.
