Series 7 marked the complete consolidation of the post-McAvoy, post-Duff ensemble. The original core Gallagher siblings had departed, and the show was now substantially a different ensemble wearing a familiar name. Critics were divided on whether the estate's newer residents could carry the emotional weight the founding cast had borne. Frank, now more self-consciously iconic than organically monstrous, remained the connective tissue. The series held its audience while generating little of the critical conversation that had surrounded the early run.
