Summer Time Rendering Season 1 Episode 1 'Reaper' aired April 15, 2022 on Disney+ (Japan broadcast) as the premiere of the 25-episode series. MyAnimeList scored the series 8.46 from 293,000 ratings, ranking it among the highest-rated mystery-thriller anime of the 2020s. ANN reviewer Kim Morrissy awarded an A- for the full season and noted that it 'keeps adding layers to its central premise.' The premiere returns Shinpei to Hitogashima island for the funeral of his childhood friend Ushio and within the same episode introduces evidence that the drowning was not an accident. OLM's production grounds the island setting with specific visual texture - the heat, the light, the isolation - before introducing the shadow phenomenon in its closing sequence. The final scene of Episode 1 is the series' first commitment: the image that recontextualises the preceding twenty minutes and establishes the time-loop stakes the show will operate under for the next 24 episodes.
