The Maeve storyline is the season's most emotionally coherent thread; her journey through Shogun World is the most cinematically ambitious thing the series attempts. Dolores as revolutionary, Ford's legacy, the true nature of the Cradle - it's all intellectually serious material handled with real craft. But the structural complexity begins to feel like opacity for its own sake. Audience IMDb scores dropped from S1 levels; the complaint (too much plot, too little character) would grow louder. Still: the finale's Valley Beyond sequence is genuinely moving and the season's best argument for itself.
