Season 4 arrives four years after S3 and demonstrates that Nolan and Joy still have creative ideas worth pursuing. The time-jump and role reversal - hosts and humans swapping the power dynamic - is the most structurally elegant twist since S1's timeline reveal. Thandiwe Newton's Maeve is at her best here; the season's best episodes belong to her. Christina's storyline in the finale hints at a thematic resolution that the show never got to complete. HBO's cancellation announcement mid-production meant the writers were trying to compress a planned S5 into a half-season ending. Critics improved to 80%; the audience knew by this point they were watching a truncated conclusion to something that deserved more runway. Still worth watching for what it achieves within those constraints.
